What Nigerians Listened to in 2023: Spotify’s Wrapped Reveals Top Artists, Songs and Podcasts

Published on

Spotify, the world’s leading audio streaming platform, has unveiled its annual Wrapped feature, which gives users a personalized recap of their musical journey in 2023. The feature also reveals the most popular artists, songs, albums, genres, and podcasts among Nigerian listeners.

According to Spotify, Nigerian music lovers showed a strong preference for local music, with consumption growing by an impressive 284 percent. The top 10 most streamed artists in Nigeria were all Nigerian, with Rema leading the pack, followed by Asake, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido.

Rema, who recently won a Grammy nomination for his album Rave & Roses, also dominated the global charts, becoming the first African-led single to reach a billion streams on Spotify with his collaboration with Selena Gomez on Calm Down. The song also topped the Nigerian song export chart and the global top 10 chart.

Asake, another rising star of the Afrobeats genre, captivated audiences across Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo, earning him the title of most streamed artist in each country. He also had three songs in the top 10 most streamed tracks in Nigeria: Lonely At The Top, 2:30, and Amapiano.

The most streamed female artist in Nigeria was Ayra Starr, a Spotify RADAR alumnus and Grammy nominee, who also topped the charts in Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Mercy Chinwo, a gospel artist, secured a spot among the top 10 most streamed female artists in Nigeria, underscoring the enduring popularity and influence of gospel music.

The most streamed podcast in Nigeria was KOINONIA with Apostle Joshua Selman, followed by The HonestBunch Podcast, I Said What I Said, Tea with Tay, and Koinonia Experience With Apostle Joshua Selman (ENI). These podcasts reflect the interests and tastes of Nigerian listeners, especially Gen Zs and Millennials, who enjoy engaging and entertaining content on various topics.

The throwback charts for 2023 were dominated by the legendary 2Pac, whose music saw a resurgence of interest due to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, the numerous headlines surrounding his death this year, and his enduring status as one of the most influential and successful rappers of all time.

Spotify’s Wrapped feature is a unique and immersive way for users to reflect on their musical preferences and discover new gems. It also showcases the diversity and passion of Nigerian music and culture, as well as the talent and creativity of its artists.
