  • No deaths recorded after a four-storey building housing a private school collapsed in Ogba, Lagos, as occupants evacuated moments before the incident.
  • Several students sustained injuries during the evacuation and were taken to hospital for treatment.
  • Lagos authorities have launched an investigation, with nearby buildings sealed while structural safety assessments are conducted.

The Lagos State Government has commenced a full-scale investigation into the collapse of a four-storey building that housed a private school and residential apartments in the Ogba area of Lagos.

The building, located on Adu Street in the Aguda axis of Ogba, collapsed on Monday, sparking panic among residents and raising fresh concerns about structural safety and regulatory compliance in the state.

Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded in the collapse, although several students sustained injuries while being evacuated from the building.

Students, Staff Evacuated Moments Before Collapse

According to the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the structure accommodated Yemco Daycare Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College alongside residential occupants.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, LASBCA confirmed that students, teachers, and other occupants had already left the building before it eventually collapsed.

The agency said the timely evacuation prevented what could have been a tragic disaster after the collapse.

Reports from residents indicated that the building collapse occurred at about 11:00 a.m., shortly after a visible crack was noticed on the structure’s wall.

A nearby fashion designer reportedly spotted the crack and immediately alerted school authorities and neighbours, prompting teachers to swiftly evacuate pupils from the building.

Witnesses said the structure caved in only minutes after the evacuation was completed.
Although no lives were lost, some students reportedly sustained injuries during the hurried evacuation and were subsequently taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Emergency response teams, including officials from LASBCA and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), quickly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and ensure public safety.

Authorities also cordoned off the area and began immediate safety checks on surrounding buildings.
