Several passengers sustained injuries on Monday after a train operating along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor derailed following a reported collision, raising fresh concerns about safety on one of Nigeria’s busiest rail routes.

The incident, which occurred near Asham, involved a train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna. Authorities say the derailment happened after the train encountered an obstruction or collision along the track, though the precise circumstances remain unclear.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the development, noting that emergency response efforts were immediately activated.

According to him, while several passengers were injured in the incident, no fatalities had been recorded as of the time of reporting.

He explained that all injured passengers were promptly evacuated from the scene and transported back to Idu train station in Abuja, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

The swift evacuation helped prevent further complications and ensured that victims received urgent care.

Investigations into the Incident Begins

Opeifa further disclosed that the corporation has commenced a full-scale investigation to determine the exact cause of the derailment. He assured the public that safety remains a top priority for the agency and that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence once findings are established.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line is a critical transport link, widely used by commuters seeking a safer alternative to road travel amid ongoing security concerns along the highway corridor. Monday’s incident, however, highlights the need for continued vigilance and infrastructure safety checks within the rail system.

Authorities have urged calm as investigations continue, promising to provide updates as more details emerge.
