  • Security forces repel attackers and restore relative calm in Bargaja

  • Two vigilantes killed as police launch investigation into incident

Conflicting narratives have followed a recent bandit attack on Bargaja community in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, with residents pushing back against claims of a mass exodus.

Some residents said while the attack caused panic, reports suggesting the town was deserted were exaggerated.

A local source, who spoke anonymously, said only a few families left temporarily as a precaution.

Residents cite security presence

The resident said the arrival of security personnel, including troops of the Nigerian Army, helped stabilise the situation and reassured many people.

According to him, several families who initially planned to leave decided to stay after patrols were intensified.

Malam Altine Guyawa, a public affairs commentator from the area, confirmed the attack and said it triggered fear but not widespread displacement.

He added that local vigilantes, working with security agencies, have continued to resist such incursions.

Troops repel attackers

A security source said troops recently engaged armed bandits who attempted another हमला on Bargaja and nearby settlements.

The source said the response helped repel the attackers and prevent further escalation.

He described the situation as stable, adding that consultations between community leaders and security agencies encouraged residents to remain.

Casualties reported in clash

Separate reports indicate that at least two people were killed during the attack, including members of a local vigilante group.

Security analyst Bashiru Altine Giyawa said the vigilantes confronted the attackers in a gun battle.

He identified the victims as Umaru Biri and Garba Mumminu, who died from gunshot wounds.

Residents also claimed some bandits were killed, though their bodies were taken away.

Police begin investigation

The Sokoto State Police Command said it is monitoring the situation and investigating the incident.

Spokesperson Ahmad Rufa’i said authorities would provide more details after reviewing available information.

Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere as tense, with recurring attacks in the region continuing to fuel fear among residents.
