  • Peter Obi condemns El-Rufai’s detention as political persecution, urging authorities to respect due process and the rule of law
  • El-Rufai has remained in ICPC custody since Feb. 18, facing allegations of money laundering and abuse of office
  • The Department of State Services has filed separate cybercrime charges against El-Rufai, with a court hearing set for April 23

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the continued detention of ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as politically motivated and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic principles.

Obi made the remarks Saturday at a stakeholders’ meeting of the African Democratic Congress in Kaduna, arguing that the handling of El-Rufai’s case undermines the rule of law and due process.

“It is a political persecution. We have a law, and that law allows for people to be treated with dignity until they are found guilty. Let our law prevail,” Obi said.

He also questioned the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s arrest, noting that the former governor had returned to Nigeria voluntarily before being taken into custody.

“How do you invite someone who returned on his own and then treat him like a fugitive? Let the law take its course,” he said.

El-Rufai held since February amid corruption allegations

El-Rufai has remained in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission since Feb. 18, following his transfer from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Authorities say he is under investigation for alleged money laundering and abuse of office.

In a separate development, the Department of State Services has filed cybercrime charges against him. A court hearing on that matter is scheduled for April 23.

Legal team, family push back against detention

El-Rufai has challenged his detention in court, accusing security agencies of abuse of power and unlawful incarceration.

His legal team, led by Ubong Esop Akpan, has alleged misuse of court processes by the anti-corruption agency.

Family members have also called for his release, insisting that authorities follow due legal procedure.

The case continues to stir debate across Nigeria’s political circles, with growing concerns over its implications for the country’s justice system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
