The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, and sentenced him to 72 years imprisonment over a N868.46 million fraud.

The judgment followed his prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on charges bordering on money laundering.

In a statement posted on its official X handle, the EFCC described the conviction as a significant step toward promoting accountability and deterring financial crimes in the public sector.

The anti-graft agency said the case involved the diversion and concealment of public funds totaling more than N868 million.

Court finds evidence of multiple laundering transactions

According to the EFCC, the court found Nwabuoku guilty after reviewing evidence presented by prosecutors detailing how the funds were allegedly laundered through multiple financial transactions.

The agency maintained that the prosecution successfully established the offences beyond reasonable doubt.

The 72-year sentence represents the cumulative penalties for the various counts on which Nwabuoku was convicted. The court imposed separate terms for each charge, which together added up to the total jail term.

Nwabuoku had briefly served as Acting Accountant-General of the Federation before he was removed from office following corruption allegations.

His conviction marks one of the high-profile rulings involving a former top government finance official.
