KEY POINTS

  • Bosnia stuns Italy in Europe’s most shocking playoff result.
  • DR Congo and Iraq claim final two intercontinental spots.
  • Tournament opens June 11 with Mexico hosting South Africa.

The 2026 World Cup field is complete. With the March international break wrapped up, all 48 teams have locked in their places in a tournament that the United States, Canada and Mexico will jointly host for the first time, making it the largest field in the competition’s history.

Six spots remained in play heading into the final playoff window: four for UEFA nations and two through FIFA’s intercontinental playoffs. Teams claimed all six slots before the window closed, and not without a measure of drama that will linger well into the summer.

The slot distribution across the 48 places breaks down as follows: 16 to UEFA, nine to the Confederation of African Football, eight to the Asian Football Confederation, six to CONCACAF including the three host nations, six to CONMEBOL, one to the Oceania Football Confederation and two via the intercontinental playoffs.

Italy out, Bosnia in

Furthermore, Bosnia and Herzegovina delivered the biggest shock of the European playoff round, eliminating Italy to book a place at the 2026 World Cup. Turkey, Sweden and the Czech Republic also advanced through their respective ties, completing a UEFA contingent of 16 teams. Italy’s exit removes one of European football’s most storied programs from the tournament field.

The two intercontinental playoff spots produced tightly contested results. The Democratic Republic of Congo edged Jamaica 1-0, while Iraq defeated Bolivia 2-1 to seal the final berth in a qualification process that now sends all 48 teams to North America.

The groups are set

The draw placed the United States in Group D alongside Paraguay, Australia and Turkiye, with host nation Mexico in Group A against South Africa, South Korea and the Czech Republic. While Canada enters Group B alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland.

Among the tournament’s leading contenders, Argentina draws Group J with Algeria, Austria and Jordan. France faces Senegal, Iraq and Norway in Group I. England will navigate Group L against Croatia, Ghana and Panama, while Brazil opens Group C against Morocco, Haiti and Scotland.

Finally, the 2026 World Cup gets under way on June 11 at the Mexico City Stadium, with Mexico taking on South Africa in the opening match. The final is scheduled for July 19.
