The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has suspended senior officers in charge of the Lagos–Seme border commands following allegations of extortion and misconduct involving personnel at the crossing point.

The action comes after online reports surfaced accusing immigration officials of harassing and extorting travellers.

NIS spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, disclosed that the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has temporarily relieved the affected comptrollers of their responsibilities pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

The suspension, according to the service, is aimed at ensuring a transparent and unbiased probe into the allegations.

The Immigration service described the conduct captured in the reports as “unacceptable” and a direct violation of its core values and operational standards. It stressed that the investigation would identify all officers involved, with appropriate disciplinary measures to be applied immediately where culpability is established.

The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and transparency at all entry and exit points across the country. It noted that the suspension forms part of broader efforts to strengthen internal accountability mechanisms and maintain service standards.
