  • Corporal Ude Jude sustained stab injuries in a civilian altercation outside Funtua Forward Operating Base on February 16, 2026
  • The Garrison Commander facilitated post-death welfare arrangements including a coffin and mortuary payment

The Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade on Sunday dismissed viral claims that the Katsina soldier death involved internal sabotage or neglect, calling the media reports false and deliberately crafted to undermine public confidence in the army.

In a statement, brigade spokesman Captain Abayomi Adisa corrected media misidentification of the deceased as a lieutenant. The soldier was Corporal Ude Jude, a member of the 67 Regular Recruit Intake who enlisted in 2012 and came from Ezeagu Local Government Area in Enugu State.

Civilian dispute, not barracks conflict

Meanwhile, the brigade insisted the Katsina soldier death occurred away from the barracks. On February 16, 2026, Corporal Ude Jude left his post at Funtua Forward Operating Base to buy personal items when attackers assaulted him. Preliminary independent verification suggested a personal dispute with a civilian, not an orchestrated internal attack.

After receiving first aid, the brigade evacuated him to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where medical staff placed him under supervised care. On March 24, staff dressed his wounds before he returned to his barracks residence. He later collapsed outside that residence; medical personnel confirmed his death on arrival at the centre.

Welfare measures honored, suspects sought

Furthermore, the army refuted allegations of abandonment. The Garrison Commander arranged a coffin and covered mortuary costs, while the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu provided additional institutional support. Military honors and accoutrements went to Ude Jude’s next of kin.

Additionally, the brigade said it delayed its public statement to allow thorough internal verification and medical record consolidation. However, the army confirmed that efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators remain ongoing.
