KEY POINTS
- Gbenga Daniel was barred from attending an APC caucus meeting in Ijebu-Ode
- He declared any decisions from the meeting invalid due to his exclusion
- The incident reflects ongoing tensions linked to his suspension and the Ogun East senatorial race
Gbenga Daniel, the senator representing Ogun East, was denied entry into a caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress held in Ijebu-Ode on Monday.
A viral video circulating on X captured the moment the senator’s convoy was stopped from accessing Adeola Odutola Hall, where the meeting was taking place.
Addressing supporters from a vehicle outside the venue, Daniel expressed dissatisfaction with the development, stating that any resolutions reached at the meeting should be considered invalid due to his exclusion.
Speaking in Yoruba, the former governor said the denial of access raises questions about the legitimacy of the gathering, insisting that decisions taken without full participation of stakeholders would not stand.
The incident adds to ongoing tensions within the party in Ogun East, particularly as political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections continue to take shape.
Suspension and past actions deepen party divisions
Daniel’s strained relationship with the party dates back to August 2025, when the Ogun APC suspended him indefinitely over alleged anti-party activities. He was accused of urging his supporters to vote for Bolarinwa Oluwole of the Peoples Democratic Party during a by-election in the state.
The election, conducted to fill the vacant seat in the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North federal constituency following the death of Adewunmi Onanuga, was eventually won by Adesola Elegbeji of the APC.
The current dispute is also linked to the contest for the APC senatorial ticket in Ogun East, with Daniel seeking re-election while Dapo Abiodun is also reportedly interested in the seat.
The competition between both politicians is believed to have intensified internal divisions within the party, contributing to the events surrounding the caucus meeting.
