Over 11,000 Nigerians apply to sail on Navy warship

KEY POINTS

  • More than 11,000 Nigerians have applied to sail on a Nigerian Navy warship.
  • Director of Naval Information Abi Folorunso said the response far exceeded expectations and outstripped available space on designated ships.
  • The Navy will publish the list of successful applicants between May 1 and May 3, 2026.

Navy Captain Abi Folorunso, the director of naval information, says more than 11,000 Nigerians have applied to sail on a Nigerian Navy warship. The number caught even the Navy off guard, exposing both the appetite for the rare experience and a logistical headache for the service.

Folorunso shared the figure on his X handle on Friday, calling the response a surprise. He said the Navy never anticipated this level of public interest in the once-in-a-lifetime experience. “So far over 11,000 persons have applied to sail on a Nigerian Navy warship!! First I must confess that I didn’t expect this number of persons,” he said.

A space problem

However, Folorunso flagged a clear obstacle. The designated ships simply cannot fit everyone who signed up. “Challenge is we cannot get over 11,000 people onboard the limited space on the designated ships,” he added.

As a result, the Navy will run a selection process. Folorunso said the list of successful applicants will land on the Navy’s official handles between May 1 and May 3, 2026. “We will be disclosing the successful applicants between May 1-3, 2026. All applicants will need to visit @NigerianNavy and other Nigerian Navy social media platforms to check,” he said.

Inside the citizens’ sail

The Navy unveiled the program in early April as part of its annual Navy Week celebrations. Officials describe it as a “citizens’ sail” or open-day experience, giving ordinary Nigerians rare access to naval platforms typically off-limits to civilians.

According to the Navy, the goal is to promote transparency and strengthen civil-military relations. Specifically, the warship sailing experience is a relatively new addition that aims to deepen public engagement and showcase naval capabilities at a time when public trust in security agencies has waned.

The flood of applications reflects a striking shift in how Nigerians view the country’s military. Beyond the novelty of stepping aboard a warship, the program offers a window into an institution most citizens know only through televised ceremonies and security briefings.

Furthermore, the Navy opened an online application portal shortly after the announcement and used its verified social media platforms to publicize the exercise. Officials also outlined participation guidelines, including basic identification requirements and adherence to safety protocols.

Navy Week and what comes next

Navy Week typically features ship tours, ceremonial parades, medical outreaches and community engagement programs across coastal states. The annual celebration is a flagship of the Navy’s public-facing calendar and serves as the institution’s most direct line to civilian Nigeria.

Notably, participants in the sailing experience will undergo screening before boarding and must comply with all onboard regulations, given the sensitive nature of naval operations.

With the response now blowing past 11,000, the Navy faces both a logistical headache and a credibility opportunity. How smoothly the selection process unfolds over the next few days will shape whether this turns into a model for future civic engagement or a one-off that frustrates more Nigerians than it delights.
