A fresh wave of tension has emerged in Plateau State after the convoy of the Ngolong Ngas, His Royal Highness Nde Jika Golit, was reportedly attacked in Mangu Local Government Area. The incident, said to have occurred on May 1, 2026, involved suspected youths in the Sabon Garri community.
According to reports, the monarch was returning from an official function when the attack happened. The Ngas Youth Movement (NYM) Global described the development as disturbing, especially given that the convoy was clearly marked as belonging to a traditional ruler.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Shiktong Joshua Yanchi, and Global President, Prince Dr Gofor Gompwel, the NYM strongly condemned the incident. The group called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
They described the attack as unacceptable and urged authorities to act quickly to prevent further escalation. The group insisted that those behind the incident must be publicly held accountable to serve as a deterrent.
Allegations of deliberate targeting
The group claimed that the attackers continued their actions even after recognising that the convoy belonged to the monarch. According to the statement, the assailants allegedly made statements suggesting the attack was intentional before damaging the royal vehicle.
This, the group said, raises serious concerns about the safety of traditional leaders in the area and points to a deeper issue of hostility that needs urgent attention.
Linking the incident to a broader pattern, the NYM alleged that there has been increasing hostility against the Ngas people in recent times. The group referenced previous incidents and claims of misinformation targeting members of the community.
They described the attack on the monarch’s convoy as more than an isolated case, saying it reflects a growing trend that could threaten peace in the region if not addressed.
The group warned that failure to bring those responsible to justice could lead to further tension. It described the attack as an affront not just to the monarch but to the entire Ngas community.
They stated that if no action is taken, the incident could be seen as a direct provocation, with potential consequences for peace and stability in the area. While maintaining that the Ngas people are peace-loving, the group stressed that they reserve the right to respond to any continued provocation.
