Nurses Raise Alarm Over Alleged Intimidation at FMC Abeokuta

KEY POINTS

  • Nurses’ group accuses FMC Abeokuta management of intimidation and rights suppression.
  • Assault case and a suspicious home intrusion have raised serious safety concerns.
  • Forum demands protection, transparency, and justice for the victim.

The Elegant Nurses Forum has raised serious concerns over what it describes as growing intimidation, safety threats, and suppression of workers’ rights at the Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta.

In a strongly worded statement, the group alleged that the hospital’s management has failed to protect staff and may be complicit in actions that undermine fairness, particularly in handling a sensitive assault case involving senior nursing personnel.

At the centre of the crisis is Chief Nursing Officer Odusola Oluwakemi, who was reportedly assaulted by a colleague identified as Fagoyinbo Ganiyat Abosede.

The forum stated that what initially appeared to be a workplace dispute has escalated into a broader issue, with growing fears that the case may be mishandled due to internal influence and alleged bias within the institution.

Security Breach Raises Fresh Fears

Tensions intensified after a disturbing incident at the victim’s residence, where an unidentified individual reportedly gained access to her home under suspicious circumstances.

According to the forum, the intruder scaled the fence and only fled after electricity was suddenly restored, exposing his presence and prompting neighbours to raise an alarm, an event that has deepened fears about the victim’s safety and heightened suspicion around the ongoing case.

The forum criticised the hospital management for allegedly attempting to downplay the incident by distancing it from the assault case, questioning the legitimacy of such a conclusion. It argued that determining the cause of a security breach falls within the responsibility of law enforcement authorities, not hospital administrators, and warned that such statements could undermine the integrity of the investigation.

According to the forum, a meeting held at the Ogun State Police Command involved the victim, the accused, legal representatives, and hospital officials, during which attempts were allegedly made to pressure the victim into accepting an out-of-court settlement. The victim reportedly rejected these efforts, insisting on pursuing justice through legal means, while the forum expressed concern that the hospital’s push for internal resolution could be aimed at suppressing her rights rather than ensuring fairness.

The forum has called for immediate measures to guarantee the safety of the victim and demanded a transparent and unbiased investigation into both the assault and the security breach. It also urged relevant authorities to closely monitor the actions of the hospital’s management, warning that any harm to the victim would raise serious questions about accountability and institutional responsibility.
