Tambuwal Steps Down from Sokoto South Senate Race

KEY POINTS

  • Aminu Tambuwal has withdrawn from the Sokoto South Senate race under the ADC and endorsed Faruk Yabo.
  • The decision followed a reconciliation agreement among ADC stakeholders in Sokoto State.
  • Senator Ibrahim Lamido also reportedly stepped down from his race, while the ADC is yet to name a candidate for Sokoto East.

Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has withdrawn from the race for the Sokoto South Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Tambuwal has now endorsed former Sokoto State Commissioner for Finance, Faruk Yabo, as his preferred candidate for the party’s ticket in the district.

The development was confirmed on Friday by Tambuwal’s aide, Michael Abimboye, who said the decision came after a reconciliation agreement reached among key stakeholders of the ADC in Sokoto State.

The agreement reportedly aimed to reduce internal disputes within the party and strengthen unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Senator Lamido Also Reportedly Steps Down

As part of the same political arrangement, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, who currently represents Sokoto East, was also said to have withdrawn from his own contest.

However, the ADC is yet to officially announce a candidate for the Sokoto East Senatorial district.

Tambuwal officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC in March 2026, marking a significant shift in Sokoto politics.

He represented the Tambuwal/Kebbe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2015 and served as Speaker of the House between 2011 and 2015.

He later became Governor of Sokoto State, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023 before returning to the Senate.
