The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has declared a nationwide solidarity and peace protest to demand the immediate and safe release of teachers and students abducted during recent attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno states.

The protest, scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2026, comes amid increasing concerns over the persistent insecurity affecting educational institutions across Nigeria. The union said the action was necessary to pressure authorities into intensifying efforts to rescue the victims and improve security around schools.

According to the NUT, the demonstration reflects the frustration and anxiety among teachers who continue to face threats from kidnappers and armed groups while carrying out their duties.

Abuja Gathering Set for Early Morning

In a notice issued to members and signed by the Publicity Secretary of the NUT Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, Comrade Ibukun Adekeye, teachers were directed to assemble at the Federal Ministry of Education headquarters in Abuja’s Central Business District by 8:00 a.m.

The notice explained that the protest was organised following a directive from the national leadership of the union and forms part of a coordinated nationwide effort to advocate for the freedom of the kidnapped victims.

The union encouraged members to participate both individually and through their local branches, urging them to wear NUT-branded shirts and caps as a symbol of unity and solidarity.

In its message to members, the NUT stressed that the safety of teachers and students should be treated as a national priority.

The union noted that many members had repeatedly asked when action would be taken regarding the abduction of teachers and learners in Oyo and Borno states. It stated that the planned demonstration was the union’s response to those concerns.

According to the statement, the protest is intended not only to demand the release of those in captivity but also to send a strong message that attacks on schools and education workers will not be ignored.

The union declared that every attack on a teacher affects the entire profession and warned that remaining silent in the face of such incidents would only worsen the situation.

NUT leaders described the protest as a collective demand for the safety, dignity, and protection of all teachers and students across Nigeria.
