An Islamic scholar was killed in the early hours of Friday after armed men stormed his residence in Ilesha-Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, in what has further heightened security concerns in the region.
The attack reportedly occurred around dawn when gunmen invaded the home of the cleric, a respected Islamic scholar in the community. According to security-focused publication Zagazola Makama, the assailants struck suddenly, leaving residents in shock as gunfire rang out in the quiet settlement.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, as police authorities are yet to issue a definitive statement on what triggered the raid. However, the incident has intensified fears among locals already grappling with recurring insecurity in parts of Kwara’s border communities.
Residents and Vigilantes Engage Gunmen, Two Attackers Killed
In a swift response, residents alongside local vigilante groups pursued the fleeing attackers after the assault. During the confrontation, two of the gunmen were reportedly overpowered and killed.
Security operatives later arrived at the scene to restore order and prevent any escalation or retaliatory violence. Personnel from the 244 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with police units, were deployed to the area to stabilize the situation.
Authorities have since increased patrols in and around the community, while investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the armed group believed to have escaped.
Following the incident, security agencies urged residents to remain calm and provide useful intelligence that could assist ongoing investigations. The area has since witnessed heightened military and police presence aimed at preventing further attacks and restoring public confidence.
The killing adds to a worrying pattern of violence in Baruten LGA. Just a week earlier, on May 25, gunmen abducted 10 people from the Yashikira Emir’s palace and attacked a local police station. Two days before that, three worshippers were killed and 15 others kidnapped at a prayer ground in Ekiti LGA of the state.
