Pandemonium engulfed Emede community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State after a violent confrontation between local youths and operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF), popularly known as Operation Delta Sweep, left several people injured, properties destroyed, and two security operatives reportedly hospitalised.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, has heightened tensions in the oil-producing community and prompted intervention by local authorities seeking to prevent a further breakdown of law and order.

Security Operation Sparks Confrontation

According to eyewitness accounts, the trouble began when a team of Operation Delta Sweep operatives arrived in Emede in a white Hilux vehicle and reportedly stormed a popular brothel in the community.

The task force, which comprises personnel from the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), was said to be carrying out an operation targeting suspected illicit drug users.

Residents claimed that the operatives entered the area heavily armed and began questioning and arresting individuals found at the location. Witnesses alleged that some of those targeted were customers at the establishment, while others were merely there to socialise and purchase drinks.

An eyewitness said the operation quickly generated suspicion among community members after some residents questioned the purpose of the raid. According to him, tensions escalated when operatives allegedly began making arrests and issuing threats.

The source claimed that efforts by the operatives to fire warning shots were unsuccessful, which emboldened some youths in the community to resist the operation.

As tempers flared, a violent confrontation reportedly broke out between the youths and the security personnel.

Witnesses alleged that the youths overpowered some of the operatives during the clash, leaving two security officers severely injured. The officers were reportedly beaten unconscious and later rushed to a hospital for medical treatment, while other members of the task force managed to escape from the scene.

Community members attributed the confrontation to what they described as a violation of local protocols regarding security operations.
