The state government of Akwa Ibom has shown its appreciation and respect for the armed forces by donating millions of naira to the widows of fallen heroes and the Nigerian Legion. The donation was announced on Monday, during the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day/Laying of Wreath ceremony.
A Gesture of Gratitude
Governor Umo Eno, who joined other governors across the country to mark the event, said that the citizens owe the fallen heroes an eternal debt of gratitude, not just words, but concrete actions. He said that the brave men and women who died in the line of duty sacrificed their lives to safeguard the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
He announced a donation of 100 million naira to the widows of fallen heroes, and 25 million naira to the Nigerian Legion, an association of ex-servicemen and women. He said that the donation was a way of giving the families of the deceased a reason to feel proud that their loved ones died for a noble cause.
He also revealed that he lost his father, a police officer, in the line of duty, and empathized with the challenges faced by the widows. He said that he understood what they were going through, as his mother had to raise six children alone.
A Call for Peace and Unity
Governor Eno also appealed to the citizens to shun tendencies that inflame passions in the polity and to celebrate the diversity of Nigeria as a source of strength rather than weakness. He urged the people to lower the temperature of incendiary and divisive rhetoric and to address the root causes of social tensions that have given rise to separatist agitations all over the nation.
He said that the issues that led the fallen heroes to the various theaters of conflict should be better managed in the present time and that the nation should learn from the lessons of history. Governor Eno said that the best way to honor the memory of the fallen heroes was to ensure that their sacrifices were not in vain and to work together for the peace and progress of Nigeria.
A Milestone of Remembrance
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an annual event that commemorates the end of the Nigerian Civil War on January 15, 1970 and honors the members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who died in the course of their service. The event features the laying of wreaths on the tomb of the unknown soldier, the ceremonial release of pigeons, and the observance of a minute of silence.
The event also serves as a platform to raise funds for the welfare of the veterans and their families, and to promote the values of patriotism, loyalty, and service among the citizens. The event is usually attended by the president, the vice president, the governors, the service chiefs, the lawmakers, the diplomats, and other dignitaries.
The 2024 edition of the event was the 54th since its inception, and the first since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted the normal activities of the nation. The event was held under strict health and safety protocols and with a reduced number of participants.
The event also coincided with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, which was marked on October 1, 2020. The anniversary was themed “Together”, and aimed at fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among the diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural groups that make up Nigeria.
It was an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and challenges of Nigeria as a nation and to renew the commitment to the ideals of democracy, justice, and development. The event also showcased the resilience and optimism of Nigerians, who have overcome various adversities and crises in the past, and who are hopeful for a brighter future.
The event was a reminder of the need to support and appreciate the armed forces, who have been at the forefront of defending the sovereignty and security of Nigeria, and who have also contributed to peacekeeping and humanitarian missions around the world.
