Senator Akanbi Urges Patience with President Tinubu’s Administration

Published on

Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi, a notable chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and founder of the Coalition Movement for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (COMBAT), played a significant role in campaigning for President Bola Tinubu in the last general election. As a representative of Oyo State, South Senatorial District at the 8th National Assembly, Akanbi brings a seasoned perspective to the current political landscape in Nigeria.

In a recent session, Akanbi addressed the state of the nation under President Tinubu’s administration. Echoing Professor Wole Soyinka’s viewpoint, Akanbi urged patience, suggesting a year is a reasonable time frame to assess a new government. He recognized the hardships faced by Nigerians but maintained that evaluating the administration at this early stage could be premature, given that policies may not have had sufficient time to bear fruit.

Akanbi acknowledged the severe economic conditions, with soaring food prices and the inadequacy of the minimum wage in the face of inflation. He pointed to the removal of the fuel subsidy as a necessary but painful decision, and one that revealed the gravity of Nigeria’s debt situation. However, he noted that the government is actively working on policies to address these challenges.

The senator highlighted constant electricity supply as a critical factor for economic turnaround. He linked the lack of electricity to increased production costs and unemployment, emphasizing its importance for artisans and small businesses. Additionally, Akanbi expressed concern over the worsening insurgency, which negatively impacts agriculture and food security.

Regarding the South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA), Akanbi expressed disappointment that the group’s efforts have not been visibly recognized through political appointments post-election. He noted the significant contribution of Oyo State in securing the highest surplus votes for President Tinubu and advocated for acknowledgment and inclusion of those who worked towards this victory.

On the question of President Tinubu’s political strategy, Akanbi refrained from commenting on specific appointees from Oyo State but emphasized the importance of recognizing and utilizing the talents of those who contributed to the election victory. He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and decision-making, hoping for better representation and involvement in the future.

Commenting on Oyo State politics, Akanbi recognized Governor Seyi Makinde’s current prominence but noted the dynamic nature of politics, suggesting that the situation could change. He refrained from providing a direct strategy for the APC in Oyo State, highlighting the unpredictable nature of political developments.

Senator Akanbi’s insights offer a nuanced view of the current Nigerian political scenario. His call for patience reflects an understanding of the complexities of governance, especially in a nation facing economic and security challenges. His emphasis on electricity and security as pivotal issues underscores the multi-dimensional nature of Nigeria’s current challenges. The concerns raised about political recognition and the dynamics of state politics highlight the ongoing struggles within the political landscape.

In summary, Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi’s perspective provides a valuable lens through which to view President Tinubu’s early days in office and the broader political environment in Nigeria. His call for patience and a holistic assessment of the government’s performance after a year reflects a pragmatic approach to governance. At the same time, his commentary on the state of the economy, the importance of electricity, security challenges, and the dynamics of political recognition and strategy offer a comprehensive analysis of the key issues and considerations in Nigerian politics today.
