Clean Cooking Initiative Aims to Reach One Million Nigerian Households

Published on

In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, GAS360, a leading clean cooking startup in Nigeria, and Modern West Advisory (MWA), a renowned climate advisory company based in Calgary, have joined forces. Their collaboration, which was officially facilitated in Abuja by key stakeholders including the Canadian Trade Office, Nigerian Content and Monitoring Board, and National Council on Climate Change, aims to revolutionize clean cooking practices in Nigeria.

Emmanuel Uwandu, CEO of GAS360, highlighted that this venture is not just about providing clean cooking LPG solutions but also about empowering small businesses through microfinancing. The partnership, which also includes NESGAS Producing Ltd., is set to impact one million households over the next four years, significantly reducing carbon emissions in Nigeria.

The urgency of this project is underlined by the fact that in 2020, over 100,000 Nigerian households reverted to using traditional, more polluting fuels like charcoal and firewood, mainly due to the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. GAS360’s approach, focused on bolstering small businesses involved in the supply chain of cleaner fuels like liquefied petroleum gas, aims to make clean energy more accessible and sustainable.

Otomi Afiegbe, CEO of Modern West Advisory, expressed his enthusiasm for this partnership, underscoring their commitment to nationwide adoption of clean cooking practices. The initiative aligns with the goals of the National Council on Climate Change, which is working towards establishing a functional framework for carbon trading in Nigeria.

Salisu Dahiru, Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, emphasized the Council’s role in ensuring compliance with the National Climate Change Action Plan. This involves mandatory appointments of sustainability or climate change officers in entities with 50 or more staff, to facilitate data collection and ensure adherence to climate change regulations.

This partnership marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s journey towards environmental sustainability, promising a cleaner, healthier future for millions of households while supporting the growth of local businesses.
