MTN Outage Disrupts Calls and Internet Across Nigeria

Published on

MTN, a leading telecommunications network in Nigeria, is currently grappling with a significant service disruption, leaving countless subscribers unable to make calls, send texts, or access the internet. The outage, which began unfolding Wednesday night, has been attributed to “multiple fibre cuts,” impacting both voice and data services across various regions.

In response to the growing frustration among its users, MTN has issued an apology and assured its customers that its engineering team is diligently working to rectify the issue, with some areas already beginning to see a restoration of services. The company’s commitment to resolving the problem was communicated through a statement that sought patience and understanding from its subscribers, promising to restore full service as swiftly as possible.

This network challenge comes at a time when the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is tightening regulations around telecommunications services. Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, reiterated a significant directive during the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair, emphasizing that telecom operators must disconnect subscribers who fail to link their National Identification Numbers (NIN) to their SIM cards by February 28, 2024. This directive underscores the government’s push towards enhancing security and curbing fraudulent activities.

The current MTN network outage, coupled with the looming deadline for NIN-SIM linkage, places additional pressure on both the service provider and its customers. Subscribers are urged to ensure their phone lines are compliant with the NIN directive to avoid being barred from the network, adding another layer of urgency to the ongoing connectivity issues.

As MTN races against time to mend the fibre cuts and restore connectivity, the incident highlights the vulnerabilities in telecommunications infrastructure and the critical need for robust and reliable services in today’s digital age. The company’s efforts to quickly address the outage reflect its commitment to providing uninterrupted service to its millions of subscribers across Nigeria, even as it navigates the challenges posed by infrastructure damage and regulatory compliance.
