In a series of decisive actions aimed at safeguarding public health, the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully intercepted banned pharmaceutical products and dismantled multiple illicit beverage manufacturing operations across the Southeast of Nigeria. This crackdown on unregulated and potentially hazardous substances underscores NAFDAC’s unwavering commitment to eliminating the circulation of counterfeit pharmaceuticals and consumables within the region.
During a targeted raid in Onitsha, Anambra, NAFDAC operatives seized a significant quantity of banned psychoactive drugs, including 892 bottles of Codeine Syrup, among various other controlled medications that pose a serious risk to public health. These substances, notably misused by criminals for nefarious purposes, highlight the urgent need for stringent oversight and control measures to prevent their illicit distribution and consumption.
Further operations led to the uncovering of factories in Enugu and Imo states, engaged in the production of counterfeit alcoholic beverages. These clandestine operations, operating under unsanitary conditions and using unapproved ingredients such as ethanol, were found to be producing fake versions of popular brands, deceiving consumers and endangering public health. The discovery of these operations and the subsequent seizure of large quantities of counterfeit beverages, alongside manufacturing paraphernalia, is a testament to NAFDAC’s relentless pursuit of ensuring the integrity of consumable goods within the market.
NAFDAC’s actions not only disrupted the production and distribution of these illicit goods but also led to the apprehension and prosecution of individuals involved in these illegal activities. The agency’s collaboration with the Directorate of State Services was instrumental in executing these operations, reflecting the importance of inter-agency cooperation in upholding public health standards.
The Southeast Zonal Director of NAFDAC, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, emphasized the danger these substances pose to society, highlighting the agency’s dedication to eradicating the menace of counterfeit products. He also urged the public to exercise caution and vigilance, advising consumers to verify the authenticity of products by looking for NAFDAC’s quality seal before making purchases.
These recent operations are part of NAFDAC’s broader mission to ensure the safety and well-being of consumers by combating the proliferation of counterfeit and harmful products. By taking decisive action against these illegal activities, NAFDAC reaffirms its role as a guardian of public health, dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality in food, drugs, and beverages consumed by the Nigerian populace. The agency’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on counterfeit products not only protect consumers from immediate health risks but also contribute to the establishment of a safer, more trustworthy marketplace for pharmaceuticals and consumables in Nigeria.
