Peter Obi Meets Atiku, Saraki, Lamido to Discuss Nigeria’s Future

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, had an important meeting in Abuja, where he met with notable members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), such as former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Governor of Jigawa State, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Images of the meeting, which took place behind closed doors on Monday, soon went viral on numerous web platforms, generating lots of attention and discussion.

This meeting represents Obi’s first engagement with these influential political players since his well-publicized switch from the PDP to the Labour Party in May 2022. Given Obi’s prominence and the disputes surrounding his departure from the PDP—apparently as a result of frustrations with internal party dynamics and the political aspirations of other party members, most notably Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory—the move was regarded at the time as a significant realignment in Nigerian politics.

Paul Ibe, Atiku Abubakar’s communications aide, recently talked about these historical conflicts on the “Mic On Podcast.” Ibe rejected allegations that Atiku was responsible for Obi’s departure from the party, blaming instead the larger political games inside PDP at the time.

Yunusa Tanko, the chief spokesperson for Obi’s presidential campaign organization, discussed the substance of the conversations during this crucial meeting with The PUNCH. He said that the main focus of the discussions was how to deal with Nigeria’s problems, namely how to counter the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) hegemony. “It is part of the talks and attempts to battle for the soul of Nigeria,” Tanko underlined. It is hardly shocking that Obi would get together with some of his political supporters to talk about the state of the nation.

Although there were conjectures following the discussion regarding Obi’s prospective return to the PDP or a future PDP-Labor merger, Tanko insisted that these possibilities were still theoretical. These are the possible outcomes of individuals. I don’t want to dwell on that. But this is still an ongoing discussion,” he remarked.

“State of the Nation and Plight of the Poor: Obi visits Atiku, Saraki, and Lamido” is an official statement from Obi’s media team that elaborates further on the objectives of Obi’s series of meetings and provides additional context for the talks. With an emphasis on tackling the terrible circumstances faced by the impoverished and destitute, particularly in Northern Nigeria, the statement emphasized Obi’s ongoing commitment to the peace and advancement of the country.

“The Labour Party’s nominee for president in 2023, Peter Obi, has upheld his declared commitment to the advancement of national peace and security. The establishment of a Nigeria where the people are are quickly pulled out of poverty and that functions for all,” the statement read..

“Worried about the situation of the nation and the growing uncertainty in the living conditions of the poor and underprivileged, Obi visited some prominent Nigerians in Abuja on Monday,” the statement said. During each of these visits, the state of the country and ways to lessen the suffering of all Nigerians, regardless of class or location, were the main topics of discussion.”

This gathering, where important leaders discuss methods to tackle the country’s serious problems, marks a significant turning point in Nigerian politics. The results of these talks could have a significant impact on millions of Nigerians’ lives and the political state of the nation.
