Nigerian Army Bolsters West African Peace with Gambia Deployment

Published on

Nigerian soldiers are embarking on a new mission to bolster peace and stability in The Gambia. This deployment of 197 troops comes amidst ongoing security challenges within Nigeria itself, but underscores the country’s commitment to regional security.

Peacekeepers Receive Rigorous Training

The Nigerian Armed Forces announced the deployment on Friday, June 14th, 2024. These soldiers will integrate into the existing Economic Community of West African States Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG). Major General Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations for the Nigerian Army, revealed the deployment during a graduation ceremony in Jaji, Kaduna State. This ceremony marked the successful completion of a six-week pre-deployment training program designed to prepare the troops for their peacekeeping mission.

General Sinjen emphasized the significance of this training. He explained it equipped the soldiers “with the necessary tactical skills and knowledge required for peace support operations.” The curriculum covered crucial areas like civilian protection, teamwork, cultural sensitivity, and upholding human rights.

Deployment Aims to Address Gambian Instability

General Sinjen acknowledged the current political uncertainties in The Gambia. He highlighted the critical role these Nigerian troops will play in maintaining peace and security in the region. He urged the soldiers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and to treat human rights with utmost respect throughout their deployment.

“Remember that your conduct reflects not only on yourselves but also on your country, the ECOWAS region, and the international community,” General Sinjen reminded the troops.

The Nigerian Armed Forces maintains a zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse. General Sinjen reiterated this policy, warning soldiers of “severe consequences” for any violations.

Nigeria Demonstrates Commitment to Global Peacekeeping

Major General Ademola Adedoja, Commandant of the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Training Centre, underscored Nigeria’s dedication to global peace and security. He highlighted the Centre’s role in preparing Nigerian troops for peacekeeping missions around the world.

“This graduation ceremony serves as yet another testament to the unwavering commitment of Nigeria and the Nigerian Armed Forces to global peace and security,” General Adedoja said.

While deploying troops to The Gambia, Nigeria continues to grapple with its own internal security challenges. The country faces ongoing threats from banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping. The deployment to The Gambia raises questions about Nigeria’s ability to address these domestic issues while simultaneously contributing to regional security.

Regional Security Experts Offer Insights

Analysts suggest that Nigeria’s participation in peacekeeping missions like this one in The Gambia can offer valuable experience and training for its soldiers. However, they also caution that neglecting domestic security concerns could have detrimental consequences.

Dr. Nneka Okafor, a security expert at the Lagos School of International Relations, emphasizes the need for a balanced approach. “Nigeria’s commitment to regional security is commendable,” she says. “However, it’s crucial to ensure this commitment doesn’t come at the expense of addressing the pressing security challenges within the country’s borders.”

The deployment of Nigerian troops to The Gambia signifies Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to regional security and peacekeeping efforts in West Africa. However, it also raises questions about how the country will balance its regional security obligations with its own domestic security needs.
