Nigerians to Start Using Three-in-One ID Card in August

Published on

Nigeria will introduce a three-in-one identity card by August, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has confirmed. The innovative ID card will integrate identity verification, financial services, and social services into a single, multipurpose card, revolutionizing the way Nigerians access essential services.

An official from the NIMC’s implementation team, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed this development in an exclusive interview. The official emphasized that the commission has been working relentlessly to meet its targets and is on track to launch the card within the next two months.

The commission has already entered the testing and deployment phase. “We initially aimed for July, but there have been minor delays. Nevertheless, we are optimistic about a July or August rollout. If there are any changes, the public will be informed promptly,” the official stated.

Launching new technology involves significant groundwork. The official detailed the various steps involved: configuring the card, enabling the distribution outlets, and ensuring the digital wallet’s functionality. “Testing is ongoing to ensure everything runs smoothly. We also need to deploy the portal for accessing the service and ensure it is scalable. Banks need to integrate with the card system, and these detailed tasks are currently in progress,” he added.

On April 5, the NIMC, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System, announced the launch of a new card. This card is designed with payment capabilities and social service features, aiming to streamline and enhance service delivery.

The NIMC’s statement highlighted that the new identity solution is equipped to handle a wide range of social and financial services. This initiative represents a significant collaboration, aimed at providing Nigerian consumers with more options while promoting innovative, cost-effective, and competitive service delivery.

The new identity cards will feature a bank-enabled National ID card, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card. This multipurpose card is expected to simplify various processes for Nigerian citizens, making it easier to access a range of services with a single card.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is getting closer to the official launch date and is fully committed to ensuring that the card is functional and accessible. The upcoming rollout is a significant step forward for Nigeria’s modernization efforts and aims to improve service delivery for its citizens. This three-in-one identity card will not only provide a reliable identity verification system but also improve financial inclusion and simplify access to social services.
