NLC President Ajaero Defers Police Invitation Over Prior Engagement

Published on

In a developing situation involving the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana has explained why Ajaero cannot comply with the recent police invitation concerning serious criminal allegations. Ajaero, who was summoned by the Nigeria Police to appear at the Force Headquarters on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, has deferred the meeting due to a previously scheduled engagement.

Ajaero Postpones Police Appearance Citing Prearranged Commitment

According to a letter from Ajaero’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana, the NLC President received the police invitation on Monday, August 19, just one day before the scheduled appearance. The short notice, combined with a prior commitment for the same day, has made it impossible for Ajaero to honor the invitation on the specified date. Instead, Ajaero has proposed to appear at the police headquarters on Wednesday, August 29, 2024.

The letter, addressed to the Inspector General of Police and signed by attorney Samuel Ogala on behalf of Falana, stressed that the delay was purely logistical. It emphasized Ajaero’s willingness to cooperate with the investigation, requesting the police provide detailed information on the allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime leveled against him.

Falana Demands Clarity on Allegations

In the letter titled “Re: Letter of Invitation,” Falana underscored the importance of the rule of law and due process. He invoked Section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair hearing. Falana requested the police to furnish Ajaero with the specifics of the allegations against him, including the nature of the evidence that prompted the summons.

The allegations are grave, involving charges of terrorism financing and treasonable felony—offenses that carry severe penalties under Nigerian law. Despite the seriousness of the accusations, Ajaero’s legal team has maintained that their client has nothing to hide and is ready to address the issues once adequate details are provided.

This request for transparency aligns with constitutional protections and underscores the need for the police to handle the matter with the utmost diligence. Falana’s letter also highlighted the necessity of proper legal procedures, ensuring that Ajaero is fully informed of the charges before responding.

Legal and Political Implications: Awaiting a Showdown

The deferral of the police interview raises questions about the timing and manner in which the allegations have been brought against the NLC President. With Ajaero being a prominent labor leader in Nigeria, the case has drawn significant attention, particularly given the serious nature of the charges.

The legal team’s proactive approach suggests that Ajaero is preparing for a rigorous defense. The accusations, especially those related to terrorism financing, are not only legally sensitive but could also have far-reaching implications for the NLC and the broader labor movement in Nigeria.

The situation also raises concerns about the potential political undertones of the allegations. As the leader of Nigeria’s largest labor union, Ajaero has been involved in numerous high-stakes negotiations and has often been at odds with government policies. The unfolding legal battle could become a flashpoint in the ongoing discourse on labor rights and government relations in the country.

Observers are now waiting to see how the police will respond to the request for detailed information and whether the investigation will proceed transparently. In addition, the proposed date of August 29 for Ajaero’s appearance could mark a significant moment in the case, setting the stage for a potential legal showdown.
