Catholic Bishops Criticize Nigerian Government for Economic Policies Leading to Poverty

Published on

The Catholic Bishops of Nigeria have strongly criticized the government’s economic policies, accusing them of driving more Nigerians into deeper poverty. In a recent statement, the Bishops argued that President Tinubu’s administration is implementing policies that are crushing ordinary citizens while benefiting those in power and their wealthy allies.

During their meeting in Edo State, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) highlighted their concerns about the government’s approach to taxes, energy costs, and fuel prices. They claimed that these policies are hurting the poor and middle class the most, causing widespread economic pain. Despite government officials asking for patience and promising that these tough measures will lead to long-term benefits, the Bishops noted that the suffering continues to grow, with no signs of relief for the majority of Nigerians.

The Bishops were particularly vocal about the impact of high taxes and inflation on businesses across the country. They pointed out that multiple taxes from different levels of government are overwhelming businesses, leading to many companies shutting down or struggling to stay afloat. This, they argued, has resulted in a rise in unemployment and further economic hardship for many families. The Bishops called on the government to simplify the tax system to prevent the collapse of more businesses and encourage investment.

They also expressed frustration over the lack of action to improve the country’s energy supply, which has led to increased production costs and a rise in the prices of goods and services. The Bishops noted that many factories and industries have either closed down or are operating under severe constraints due to unreliable electricity and high fuel prices. This situation, they said, is made worse by the weakening value of the Naira and a shortage of foreign exchange, which has crippled the ability of businesses to import necessary materials and equipment.

Additionally, the Bishops emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan to improve food security in Nigeria. They urged the government to invest in agriculture by providing farmers with access to affordable loans, subsidies, modern farming equipment, and improved seeds. They stressed that it is crucial to avoid genetically modified seeds, focusing instead on enhancing traditional farming practices that are sustainable and beneficial for local communities.

The Bishops also warned about the ongoing issue of food insecurity, noting that the government must take urgent steps to protect farmers from insecurity and violence, which threaten their ability to produce food. They highlighted the importance of creating a safe environment for farmers, which would help increase food production and lower prices, making food more affordable for all Nigerians.

In their statement, the Bishops called for a complete overhaul of the government’s economic policies, urging leaders to focus on measures that would benefit all citizens, not just the wealthy and powerful. They suggested that a fairer approach to governance and economic management could help lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty and create a more just and equitable society.

They concluded by calling on the government to act with compassion and fairness, emphasizing the need for policies that protect the most vulnerable and promote economic stability for everyone. The Bishops argued that only through such an approach can Nigeria hope to overcome its current challenges and build a brighter future for all its citizens.
