Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, is known for producing movies that appeal to a wide range of audiences at home and abroad. One of the latest examples of this is Something Like Gold, a romantic comedy directed by Kayode Kasum and produced by Sandra Okunzuwa, who also stars as the lead actress.

The movie tells the story of Lisa, a spoiled rich girl who finds love again after being jilted at the altar by her fiancé. She has to adjust to a new life after the authorities seize her father’s wealth and learn some hard lessons along the way. She meets Bem, a charming and humble photographer who helps her rediscover herself and her true worth.

Something Like Gold has been praised by critics and audiences alike for its captivating plot, witty dialogue, stunning visuals, and stellar performances by the cast, which includes Mercy Johnson, Kunle Remi, Tope Olowoniyan, Segun Arinze, Patrick Doyle, Timini Egbuson, Teniola Aladese, Broda Shaggi and others.

The movie also features a catchy soundtrack composed by Cobhams Asuquo and performed by various Nigerian artists such as Simi, Johnny Drille, Chike, and Ric Hassani.

Something Like Gold debuted in cinemas nationwide on September 29, 2023, and has since been breaking box office records. According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), the movie grossed over N11 million in its opening weekend, making it the third highest-grossing movie in Nigeria for that period. It also ranked among the top 10 movies in West Africa and the top 20 movies in Africa.

The movie has also received positive reviews from international media outlets such as The Guardian UK, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety, which described it as “a refreshing and delightful rom-com that showcases the talent and diversity of Nollywood”.

The success of Something Like Gold is a testament to the growth and potential of the Nigerian film industry, which has been recognized as one of the largest and most influential in the world. The movie also demonstrates the creativity and innovation of Nigerian filmmakers, who are constantly exploring new genres and themes to tell captivating stories that resonate with global audiences.
