  • NDPC partners with Adeoluwa to educate on data privacy.
  • Over 40 million Nigerians are active on social media daily.
  • MoU aims to boost awareness of data protection laws.

As it inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with well-known social media influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) emphasised the pressing need to safeguard Nigerian individuals’ online data.

Data protection is a priority for Nigeria

The collaboration seeks to raise national awareness of data protection and privacy issues and encourage improved practices in these areas.

With more than 40 million Nigerians actively using social media platforms every day, protecting personal information has become a crucial national concern, according to NDPC National Commissioner Vincent Olatunji, who spoke at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday in Abuja.

Olatunji stated, “This figure demonstrates the significant need to secure personal data in Nigeria’s digital space.” “The Nigerian government is dedicated to making sure Nigerians are safe on the internet. Given that almost 40 million Nigerians use the internet every day, appropriate security measures must be put in place to safeguard our citizens’ data.

He underlined that Nigerians must be aware of their rights under the nation’s data protection legislation as well as the precise actions they can take to secure their data. Olatunji clarified that the Commission’s goal in working with the MoU is to use social media as a vehicle for educating people about data security and privacy issues.

According to punch, with a six-month initial term and a renewal option, the pact aims to use social media’s extensive reach to educate Nigerians about the value of privacy and data protection in their daily online interactions. With the help of a well-known public figure like Adeoluwa, the NDPC seeks to increase the accessibility of these ideas, particularly for younger audiences.

Government emphasizes online safety for all citizens

Olatunji emphasised that greater awareness would empower individuals who manage personal data, including data controllers and processors, as well as data subjects by ensuring they are aware of their rights and responsibilities.

In his remarks, Adeoluwa stated that he is motivated to work with the NDPC because he wants to make a significant contribution to Nigeria’s growth. “By working together on projects like these, we can help create a safer digital environment and strengthen Nigeria’s standing as a secure, privacy-conscious nation,” he said, encouraging more young Nigerians to actively participate in nation-building efforts.

Punch state, the NDPC’s overarching goal of creating a data-secure environment that complies with international standards and inspires trust in Nigeria’s developing digital ecosystem is reflected in this partnership.
