  • The High Court in Edo reinstated 18 suspended council chairmen.
  • ALGON commended the decision, citing strengthened democracy.
  • Council leaders pledged to work collaboratively with the state governor.

In a landmark ruling on Friday, a High Court sitting in Benin, Edo State, restored the suspended chairmen and vice chairmen of all 18 local government councils in the state.

Justice Efe Ikponmwonba presided over the case and emphasized maintaining the status quo as of December 12, pending the resolution of the ongoing legal matter.

The court order follows a suit filed by the affected officials against Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Edo State Government.

According to Punch, the ruling temporarily halts the implementation of the state House of Assembly’s resolution to suspend the council leaders, citing procedural concerns.

Justice Ikponmwonba set February 17, 2025, as the next hearing date, directing that a hearing notice be served to all defendants. The case underscores the judiciary’s critical role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring democratic practices in governance.

ALGON hails the court’s decision

Reacting to the ruling, Tajudeen Alade, Vice Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Edo State, commended the judiciary for its impartiality. He described the decision as a positive step toward strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

“This development is a significant boost to democracy, ensuring fairness and accountability in governance. It also motivates us to continue serving the people effectively, despite economic challenges,” Alade stated.

Alade expressed gratitude to the national leadership of ALGON for supporting the legal battle and reiterated the local government’s commitment to delivering quality governance.

“We remain focused on our duty to bring the dividends of democracy to our communities, regardless of the hurdles we face,” he added.

Call for collaboration with state leadership

Despite the tensions surrounding the suspension, the reinstated council chairmen expressed their readiness to work collaboratively with Governor Monday Okpebholo.

They emphasized the importance of a harmonious relationship between local and state governments in driving progress across Edo State.

“We recognize the governor as a leader and remain committed to fostering a productive partnership for the benefit of the people,” Alade said.

He dismissed allegations of misconduct and insubordination, stating that the local government leaders are fully aligned with the state’s developmental goals.

Meanwhile, Alade called on the Edo State House of Assembly to reevaluate its position, urging lawmakers to prioritize the interest of the people over political differences.

He commended the judiciary for its impartial stance, noting that the ruling upholds the democratic principles enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution.
