  • Court of Appeal reinstates Ude-Okoye as PDP National Secretary.
  • Samuel Anyanwu removed for violating party rules during candidacy.
  • Ude-Okoye pledges adherence to court ruling and party unity.

Sunday Ude-Okoye, former National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced plans to resume as the party’s National Secretary following a Court of Appeal ruling in his favor.

During an interview in Abuja on Thursday, Ude-Okoye reaffirmed his commitment to complying with the court’s mandate to assume office within 24 hours, stating that only a stay of execution could halt his return.

He emphasized the legitimacy of the court’s judgment and noted its importance in addressing internal challenges within the PDP, which has faced significant turmoil in recent years.

Court ruling affirms Ude-Okoye as secretary

The Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld a High Court judgment removing Samuel Anyanwu from the position of National Secretary and confirming Ude-Okoye’s appointment.

The court deemed Anyanwu’s claim to the position invalid, citing his violation of party rules by simultaneously contesting as the PDP’s governorship candidate.

Justice Ridwan Abdullahi, delivering the judgment, stated that Anyanwu’s appeal lacked merit, solidifying Ude-Okoye’s standing as the legitimate secretary.

Ude-Okoye has vowed to adhere to the ruling and serve in the role unless the Supreme Court rules otherwise.

PDP’s internal conflicts continue

The PDP has faced internal divisions before and after the 2023 general elections.

Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu have been criticized for their leadership, which some members blame for the party’s declining influence.

Damagum assumed office after Iyorchia Ayu’s removal, but the party continues to struggle with internal reforms and rebuilding its reputation.

Observers suggest that the court’s ruling could offer a chance for renewed focus on unity and effective leadership within the PDP.

Commitment to party stability

Ude-Okoye expressed optimism about his return, highlighting the importance of stability and adherence to constitutional processes within the PDP.

According to Punch, he stated his readiness to contribute to rebuilding the party’s reputation and addressing its internal challenges.

Despite ongoing conflicts, the PDP remains focused on its mission to strengthen its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.

Party members hope that resolving leadership disputes will pave the way for a more united and effective organization.
