Nigerian Drug Bust Nets Traffickers, NDLEA Rejects Bribe Attempt

Published on

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria has had a busy week, according to a press release issued on Sunday. The agency detailed a series of successful operations across the country, resulting in numerous arrests, drug seizures, and a commendable display of integrity from its officers.

Major Airport Interdiction and Bribery Rebuffed

At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, NDLEA operatives, working in collaboration with the Department of State Services, apprehended Chidinma Chinenye-Agbazue, a 35-year-old woman, for attempting to export cannabis sativa to Doha, Qatar. Moreover, the illicit drugs, weighing over 10 kilograms, were cleverly concealed inside a traditional Nigerian dish called Abacha (African salad) and dried vegetables.

The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, reported a particularly noteworthy detail during the arrest. Another suspect attempted to bribe NDLEA officers with a N5 million cash offer. This attempt was firmly rejected, and the money will now be included as evidence for prosecution in court.

Nationwide Raids Target Drug Networks

Beyond the significant airport bust, NDLEA forces conducted raids in several Nigerian states, dismantling drug trafficking operations and apprehending multiple traffickers. Here’s a glimpse into some of these successful operations:

  • Lagos: A joint operation involving NDLEA agents recovered a staggering amount of opioids – over 840,000 pills – along with codeine syrup and Molly from two suspects.
  • Bayelsa: Three individuals were thwarted in their attempt to smuggle opioids, including codeine, tramadol, and diazepam, into the creeks of the Southern Ijaw area. The drugs, concealed in large sacks, were seized, and the suspects arrested.
  • Ogun State: Also, a raid conducted by NDLEA operatives netted over 70 kilograms of cannabis, disrupting a potential distribution network.
  • Nationwide Efforts: Similar operations in Taraba, Abia, Ondo, Kano, and Edo states resulted in the seizure of additional cannabis, codeine syrup, and tramadol. These operations also led to the arrest of several suspects believed to be involved in drug trafficking activities.

Commendation for Integrity and Continued Resolve

The NDLEA commended its officers for their dedication and unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking in Nigeria. Also, the agency highlighted the rejected bribe attempt as a testament to the officers’ unwavering integrity in the face of corruption.

These recent successes demonstrate the NDLEA’s ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and safeguard Nigerian communities from the dangers of illicit substances. The agency’s determination to dismantle drug cartels and enforce drug laws serves as a beacon of hope in the fight against drug abuse in Nigeria. Moreover, the resolute rejection of the bribe attempt underscores the agency’s commitment to ethical conduct, fostering greater public trust in law enforcement.

The NDLEA’s recent string of victories is a positive development in the fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria. However, the agency acknowledges the ongoing challenges posed by this criminal activity. Continued vigilance, collaboration with international partners, and public awareness campaigns will be crucial in sustaining these successes and further weakening drug trafficking networks within Nigeria.
