Information and communication technology contributed 17.89% to Nigeria’s GDP in 2024 and it is expected to increase. Economists have urged governments to leverage the industry to drive growth.

Consequently, Enugu State has been making significant strides in youth development, particularly in the technology sector.

The state government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, has implemented various initiatives aimed at empowering young people with digital skills and fostering an environment conducive to technological innovation. One such initiative is the establishment of the Enugu State Tech Hub (ESTHUB), which serves as a centre for incubating and accelerating tech startups. ESTHUB focuses on software product development, venture creation, and both hardware and software innovations, providing young entrepreneurs with the resources and support needed to transform their ideas into viable businesses.

The government’s efforts have been complemented by the impact of some youth entrepreneurs and talents, and their initiatives and contributions are making notable contributions to the tech ecosystem in Enugu.

The state has partnered with various organizations to deliver impactful training programs. Among the key contributors to these programs are award-winning tech talents Kingsley Ukeje, co-founder of DDUC Design Studio and Eliezer Ajah’s of Genesys.

In collaboration with the Enugu State Tech Hub, these state-sponsored programs, have successfully trained over 3,000 youths in software development and product design, thereby equipping them for opportunities in the fast-evolving tech industry.

In addition to infrastructure development, Christian Okoli, the co-founder of BlueAfric media, a creative house specializing in visual design, technology and publicity. Through BlueAfric, Christian has provided employment opportunities for numerous youths in Enugu and has contributed to the state’s reputation as an emerging tech hub.

Similarly, Nkenna Emehelu’s Zap Creative has been instrumental in advancing tech education in the state. By offering design and development boot camps and mentorship programs, Nkenna’s organization has empowered many young individuals with the skills necessary to succeed in the tech industry.

Governor Mbah has also articulated a commitment to training and empowering 40,000 youths with digital and entrepreneurial skills. This ambitious plan aims to enhance the global competitiveness of Enugu’s youth, positioning them to contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Access to reliable internet, funding for startups, and adequate infrastructure are areas that require ongoing attention. However, the collaborative efforts of the government and private sector provide a promising foundation for addressing these issues.

The Enugu State government’s commitment to youth empowerment through technology, combined with the proactive initiatives of young entrepreneurs, is fostering a vibrant tech ecosystem.

As these efforts continue to evolve, Enugu is poised to become a leading centre for technological innovation in Nigeria, offering its youth a platform to drive economic growth and development.
