Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced that the state will soon reveal the names of the new 2nd class Emirs to oversee the recently established Emirates. This announcement follows the signing of the Kano State Emirate Council Establishment Bill 2024 into law. Governor Yusuf made this declaration at the Kano State Government House, flanked by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Falgore.
Strengthening Traditional Leadership
Governor Yusuf emphasized the government’s dedication to recognizing and strengthening traditional institutions. “The establishment of these Emirates is a testament to our commitment to enhance traditional leadership,” Yusuf stated. He highlighted that the traditional leadership structure has played a crucial role in the administration and development of communities in Kano State. This move signifies the administration’s recognition of the invaluable contributions that traditional institutions make in maintaining peace, stability, and fostering development.
The Kano State Emirate Council Establishment Bill 2024, now signed into law, is aimed at creating three new second class Emirates. These are Rano Emirate, which will cover Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya; Karaye Emirate, covering Karaye and Rogo; and Gaya Emirate, which will encompass Gaya, Ajingi, and Albasu. The creation of these Emirates is expected to bring governance closer to the people and enhance local administration.

Governor Yusuf underscored the importance of these new Emirates in preserving the rich cultural heritage of Kano State. “Our administration recognizes the invaluable contributions of traditional institutions in maintaining peace, stability, and fostering development,” he said. The Governor urged the newly established Emirates to work in harmony within the larger Kano Emirate to promote unity, peace, and development across the state. “As we move forward, I urge all the newly established Emirates to work in harmony within the confines of the Kano Emirate to promote unity, peace, and development across our state,” Yusuf stated.
The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore, spoke about the Assembly’s role in the creation of the new Emirates. Furthermore, he emphasized that the House had swiftly passed the bill in response to the yearnings and aspirations of the people of Kano State. “This significant milestone marks a new chapter in our continuous effort to preserve and enhance the cultural heritage and traditional institutions that are integral to the identity and unity of our dear state,” Falgore said.
Falgore added that the bill, now law, would improve the economy of the Emirates and bring the people closer to the government. Moreover, he highlighted that the new Emirates would foster better local governance and economic development, making it easier for the government to meet the needs of its citizens.
Furthermore, Governor Yusuf expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Kano State House of Assembly for their support and prompt action in passing the bill. Also, he acknowledged their significant constitutional responsibility and their efforts to respond to the aspirations of the people.

The Governor assured that the announcement of the respective second class Emirs who will take charge of the newly established Emirates will be made in due course.
