  • Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan appealed to the IPU over her suspension, calling it political victimization.
  • The IPU has assured that it will consider both sides before making any decisions.
  • Further developments are expected as the IPU reviews the matter.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has assured that it will take appropriate steps regarding the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan but only after hearing from all parties involved.

Natasha appeals for justice at IPU meeting

Senator Natasha, who was recently suspended from the Nigerian Senate, took her case to the IPU during a session dedicated to women in parliament.

She described her suspension as unjust and appealed for intervention from global democratic institutions.

“I come with a heavy heart from Nigeria,” Natasha said, fighting back tears. “I am not here to bring shame to my country but to seek help for the women of Nigeria.”

She explained that her troubles began after she submitted a petition on March 6, 2025, accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.

Natasha said she hoped the petition would lead to a fair investigation, but instead, she was suspended.

“My suspension came with harsh conditions,” she said. “My security was withdrawn, my official vehicles and entitlements were taken away, my salary was cut off, and I was banned from appearing anywhere near the National Assembly.

For six months, I cannot present myself as a senator, either locally or internationally.”

Natasha argued that her suspension is part of a larger issue of political victimization aimed at silencing women in leadership.

“If a female senator can be treated this way in public, imagine what ordinary Nigerian women face every day,” she added.

IPU promises to consider all sides

Responding to Natasha’s plea, IPU President Tulia Ackson acknowledged the seriousness of the concerns raised but emphasized that the organization’s approach requires hearing from all sides before taking action.

“We have listened to Senator Natasha, and we acknowledge the gravity of her concerns,” Ackson said.

“However, in line with IPU’s tradition of fairness, we must also hear from the other side. After considering all perspectives, we will take the necessary steps.”

Ackson also noted that a Nigerian delegate had asked to speak on the matter but wasn’t given the opportunity due to time constraints.

She reassured members that the IPU would ensure a balanced and fair review process.

Awaiting IPU’s decision

The IPU’s assurance that it will listen to all parties suggests that a decision on the matter is still forthcoming.

Natasha’s appeal has drawn significant attention, and all eyes are now on the IPU to see how it will address the issue.
