Accusations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio led to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension. She rejected claims that she apologized to Senate leadership. She reiterated her stance regarding the accusations, claiming they were untrue.

Constituents of Akpoti-Uduaghan occupied the INEC offices in Abuja on Tuesday, calling for her recall right away. In a March 21 petition, the group expressed their lack of trust in her to act as their representative. Citing misconduct, abuse of office, and dishonest behavior, the petition cited their constitutional rights in Nigeria to demand her removal.

Last Thursday, a court issued an interim injunction prohibiting INEC from considering or responding to any recall petitions. On Friday, however, a Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, reversed that decision, stating that the recall procedure was legitimate and advising voters to move forward in a systematic fashion.

The meeting to discuss the recall demand was confirmed by INEC. Esther Chibuikem, the Acting Director of Publicity, said the commission was working on the issue.

According to Thisday, Akpoti-Uduaghan responded by refuting rumors that she had apologized to the Senate or changed her mind. Calling these reports “false and misleading,” she reiterated her support for her accusations against Akpabio and her determination to pursue justice. She vowed to continue her relentless pursuit of accountability and characterized her six-month suspension as politically motivated.

Additionally, Akpoti-Uduaghan made it clear that she would not be intimidated by efforts to silence her or change public opinion. She reiterated her dedication to serving her constituents with integrity and advised the public to ignore the rumors.
