Isioma Sybil Nwosu, a Biochemistry student at Lagos State University (LASU), has earned recognition as the best graduating student for the 2023/2024 academic session.

Nwosu set a new standard of academic excellence by achieving a remarkable cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.93.

Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Vice Chancellor of LASU, made the announcement on Thursday during a press briefing that kicked off activities for the 28th Convocation ceremony.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello expressed pride in LASU’s commitment to producing graduates who are well-equipped for the workforce and capable of making significant contributions both nationally and globally.

LASU convocation ceremony marks important events

The LASU Convocation ceremony for 2023/24 will span several days, featuring a variety of significant events. Prof. Olatunji-Bello outlined the schedule, beginning with the press conference and Convocation Staff Sports Competition, followed by special services like the Jumat Service and a Thanksgiving Service, all part of the pre-convocation activities.

The main events will begin on April 7 with the Coconut Breaking and Cultural Festival at the Badagry Gate of the campus, Vanguard stated. Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, will deliver a lecture titled “Patriots, Citizenship, and National Ownership” on April 8.

The official award of degrees will take place from April 9-10, culminating in the conferment of honorary doctorates on distinguished individuals like Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd.) and Otunba Olufemi Olusegun Pedro.

Honorary doctorates and academic achievements at LASU

As part of the 28th Convocation, LASU will also recognize the contributions of individuals who have made significant impacts in Nigeria and the university itself. Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and Otunba Olufemi Olusegun Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, will receive honorary doctorates for their invaluable contributions.

Additionally, LASU will elevate Professor Joseph Abayomi Olagunju, a long-standing academic, to the rank of Distinguished Professor.

LASU continues to shine on the international stage, securing the top spot among state universities and leading Sub-Saharan African universities, according to the 2024 UI Greenmetrics World University ranking.
