KEY POINTS

  • Lagos to introduce special vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities.

  • LSNPPA already produces custom plates and replacements for various vehicles.

  • The initiative supports the state’s ‘Go Green’ environmental goals.

In an attempt to enhance vehicle identification, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to unveil special number plates for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The new initiative was revealed during a press briefing marking the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term. At the event, Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi shared details about the plan, underscoring its significance in promoting inclusion for PWDs.

The Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) will oversee the issuance of these special plates, further expanding its role in vehicle registration services.

LSNPPA’s diverse production of vehicle plates

In addition to the special plates for PWDs, the LSNPPA has been busy producing various other vehicle identification plates. This includes the production of 716 fancy motor vehicle plates and 347 motorcycle plates upon request. The authority also processes special requests, having produced 224 out-of-series number plates for unique needs.

Beyond this, the LSNPPA has issued over 11,000 standard plate replacements and 63 fancy replacements, ensuring accurate vehicle identification.

The authority’s reach also extends to the production of 428 official number plates, 1,510 dealer plates, and 4,000 articulated vehicle plates, supporting a wide range of vehicle registration demands in the state.

Collaboration on green initiatives and ensuring plate durability

According to Punch, Osiyemi also discussed the LSNPPA’s collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on initiatives aimed at aligning vehicle plates with the state’s “Go Green” program. The partnership seeks to contribute to environmental sustainability through vehicle registration solutions.

Addressing concerns about plate durability, Osiyemi emphasised the use of high-quality materials in their production.

However, he noted that fading is often caused by corrosive car cleaning products. He also reminded the public that, much like any other item with a lifespan, vehicle plates must be replaced when necessary to maintain accurate identification.
