Security forces, including the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Police Force, have been deployed to Ilesa Medium Correctional Centre in Osun State following a jailbreak incident.

Eyewitnesses in the Ayeso area, where the facility is located, reported a heavy presence of armed operatives. Personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were also observed securing the perimeter.

Journalists were denied access to the facility, but hooded security operatives and military vehicles lined the entrance, signaling heightened alert levels.

Osun Correctional Service spokesperson Joel Oyedokun confirmed the deployment, stating that authorities were working collaboratively to recover the escaped inmates.

Ilesa jailbreak leads to high-level supervision and search

The Osun State Commandant of the Correctional Centre has reportedly relocated to Ilesa to directly oversee security operations and lead the search.

“The Army, DSS, and other security operatives are working with us to bring back the escapees,” Oyedokun told Vanguard.

The jailbreak, which caused panic in the community, has triggered a multi-agency response. The corrections authority has not disclosed how many inmates escaped but confirmed that recovery efforts are underway.

The presence of top-level security coordination highlights the gravity of the Ilesa jailbreak and the government’s intent to restore order swiftly.

Residents near the facility have expressed concern over the incident, noting that the large deployment indicates the seriousness of the situation.

Security officials have urged residents to report any suspicious individuals or movements in the area.

Meanwhile, authorities remain silent on the exact details of how the jailbreak occurred, but the situation remains tense as efforts continue to re-arrest the escapees.

The Ilesa jailbreak has reignited calls for improved prison infrastructure and tighter surveillance in correctional facilities across Nigeria.
