President Bola Tinubu has called for meetings of the Council of State and the Police Council for Thursday, October 9, 2025, as Nigeria faces renewed waves of insecurity and social tension.
Both sessions, to be held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, reflect Tinubu’s renewed push to strengthen the country’s security framework and reassure citizens amid ongoing violence in parts of the North and Middle Belt.
Council of state meeting to review national security strategy
According to a statement from the Cabinet Affairs Office, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume has invited members to attend either physically or virtually.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Emanso Umobong said the Council of State meeting will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the Police Council at 2 p.m. The agenda, he said, will centre on national security and policing priorities.
The Council of State, chaired by the President, brings together former presidents, ex-heads of state, past chief justices, governors, and the attorney-general to advise on key national matters. The Police Council oversees the structure and discipline of senior police officers.
Focus on insecurity and leadership succession
Presidency officials said the discussions will review the security situation, evaluate military operations, and explore new strategies to combat banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes.
The meetings are also expected to address political and administrative matters, including the nomination of a new chairman for the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Thursday’s sessions will mark the second Council of State meeting under Tinubu’s leadership, underscoring his intent to strengthen coordination among federal and state actors on national stability.
Tinubu returns from Lagos after key talks
The meetings follow Tinubu’s return to Abuja on Monday after a 10-day working visit to Lagos. During the trip, he held discussions with investors and global partners, including Global Infrastructure Partners’ CEO Bayo Ogunlesi and Metis Capital Chairman Keem Belo-Osagie, focusing on energy, logistics, and infrastructure growth.
Tinubu also met International Maritime Organisation Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez to explore Nigeria’s blue economy potential.
Before heading back to Abuja, the President attended public events in Oyo, Imo, and Plateau, where he reaffirmed his pledge to strengthen national unity and deliver inclusive growth. “My mission is to unite this country and ensure its prosperity,” he said in Jos.
