  • Bandits ambushed and killed eight security officers near Tsafe in Zamfara State.

  • The victims included five police officers and three community guards on patrol.

  • Governor Lawal condemned the killings and vowed tougher action on insecurity.

Eight security officers, including five police personnel and three members of the Community Protection Guards, were killed late Thursday in an ambush by armed bandits along the Gusau–Funtuwa road in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The attack occurred near Gidan-Giye village, only a few kilometres from Tsafe town, and has deepened anxiety over persistent insecurity across northern Nigeria.

Zamfara bandit attack stirs fresh outrage

Governor Dauda Lawal confirmed the killings in a Facebook post, describing the loss as devastating. “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return,” he wrote. “I received a sad report that police officers and Askarawa were killed on the Funtuwa road to Gusau. May Allah rest their souls and grant their families strength to bear this loss. We continue to pray for an end to this crisis in Zamfara, the North, and Nigeria.”

Residents said the officers were on routine patrol to protect travellers along the road, which has become notorious for frequent ambushes. The team, made up of police officers and community guards, reportedly left Gusau earlier that evening to assess security conditions and deter armed gangs that often kidnap or rob commuters.

Witnesses described the assault as swift and coordinated. Ya’u Musa, a resident of Gidan-Giye, said the bandits suddenly emerged from the surrounding forest and opened heavy fire. “It happened fast,” he said. “The officers were driving past when the bandits attacked. All the men in the patrol vehicle were killed instantly.”

Musa added that the gunmen appeared to have prior knowledge of the patrol’s movement. “It looked like they were expecting them,” he said. “They left Gusau on a special assignment, but not long after, we heard gunshots.”

The attackers, estimated to be in large numbers, fled on motorcycles before reinforcements arrived. Residents later found the patrol vehicle riddled with bullets. “It was a terrible sight,” said another witness. “The entire area was scattered with shells.”

The remains of the eight officers were moved to the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau. Security sources confirmed that additional personnel had been deployed to comb nearby forests, though no arrests were reported as of Friday morning. The atmosphere in Tsafe remains tense, with residents fearing another strike.

Zamfara has endured years of violence from armed groups who raid villages, attack convoys, and abduct travellers for ransom. Despite repeated military operations and peace efforts, attacks persist along key routes, including the Gusau–Funtuwa highway, which many commuters now avoid.

According to Zamfara, Governor Lawal has pledged intensified operations against the gunmen, assuring residents that his administration is working closely with security agencies. “We will not give up,” he said. “The safety of our people and security personnel remains our top priority.”

A police officer mourning his colleagues said the deaths were painful. “They were our friends and brothers,” he said quietly. “Every patrol carries a risk, but this kind of loss cuts deep.”
