Hospital rush after Bayelsa deputy governor collapse

Officials in Yenagoa moved fast on Thursday after Bayelsa State’s Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, collapsed at Government House. People familiar with the situation said the incident happened in the early afternoon. His aides reacted quickly and rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre in the state capital for urgent attention. The severity of the collapse has not been made public, yet those aware of the situation described it as serious.

Details remained unclear throughout the day. Hospital officials did not immediately confirm his arrival. The spokesman of the facility, Ben Akpedi, did not respond to repeated calls seeking confirmation. That silence added to the confusion around the deputy governor’s condition, and officials close to him avoided offering explanations about what led to the collapse.

His media aide, Doubara Atasi, confirmed that the deputy governor had indeed collapsed and was receiving care. Atasi declined to speak further, saying additional information would be shared when available. That response left many questions unanswered at a time when political attention in the state has been unusually intense.

Political tension around Bayelsa deputy governor collapse

According to Punch, Ewhrudjakpo has been at the center of quiet speculation for weeks. He was absent during Governor Douye Diri’s announcement in October that he was leaving the Peoples Democratic Party. The governor’s exit from the party marked a significant shift in Bayelsa politics and raised questions about the alignment of senior officials. During the announcement, Diri did not mention the deputy governor’s position or participation in the decision.

Diri, who offered little explanation beyond “obvious reasons,” made the disclosure during an expanded executive council meeting at Government House. Key officials, including House Speaker Abraham Ingobere and his deputy, Michael Ogbere, attended the session. The governor’s spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, later said the decision followed extended consultations with political leaders. In his statement, he thanked supporters and asked them to stay active as he worked to build what he called a “strong and vibrant Bayelsa.”

The deputy governor’s collapse now adds a layer of uncertainty to an already unsettled political atmosphere. Officials say more information will be released when physicians complete their assessments.
