  • Governor cites governance and business experience.

  • Opposition strength remains central to democracy.

Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, says he has the experience and skills to lead Nigeria. This has sparked new discussion about whether he could run for president in 2027.

The governor made the comments during a meeting with a small group of journalists in Ibadan on Tuesday. He was answering questions about the growing speculation about his future in national politics. Makinde didn’t say he wanted to be a leader, but he did say that being a leader at the highest level requires preparation and proven competence.

Makinde said that his years in public office and business make him one of the people who is ready to take on national responsibility.

The goal of Makinde to run for president in 2027 has sparked a lot of discussion

Makinde said that his ability to lead Nigeria shouldn’t be questioned and that political noise is less important than leadership credentials. He talked about how his experience was similar to that of other leaders and how two terms as governor gave him a lot of experience with the problems of running a government.

He said that by May 2027, he would have finished his full term as a two-term governor. He thinks this is a big step towards being ready for a higher office. He thinks that Nigeria’s leaders should talk about capacity and results instead of personality.

Makinde said that ambition alone does not make someone a good leader. He stressed the importance of service and preparation.

Makinde’s professional background supports his goal of becoming president in 2027

Makinde said that his professional journey was more proof of his skills. He said that when he was young, he built and ran a business that worked with big oil companies from other countries instead of relying on government support.

He said that working with companies like Shell, ExxonMobil, and Chevron helped him become more disciplined and better at managing people. He says that experience affects how he handles governance, budgeting, and accountability.

Makinde said that to be a good leader, you need to know how systems work, how people work, and how to plan for the long term. He thinks these skills can be used in national government as well.

The strength of the opposition affects the way people think about politics

Makinde said that Nigeria needs a strong and trustworthy opposition to make democracy stronger. He also said that many people leaving the opposition party to join the ruling party weakens the balance of democracy. He said that governors and senior politicians switching parties doesn’t help the people who are having a hard time.

He wanted to know if hunger and public anger had also left with politicians. He says that political alignment should be about making people’s lives better instead of just staying alive.

Political analysts say that Makinde’s comments put him in a group of governors who are likely to be important in talks about 2027. As Nigeria gets closer to the next election cycle, analysts think that arguments about leadership experience and the importance of the opposition will get stronger.
