Residents demand stronger security and better network coverage
At least three people were killed and three others abducted late Monday night when suspected bandits attacked Bundu Kahugu community in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The attack happened around 11 p.m. and left residents shaken, with many fleeing their homes in fear. Community leaders described the incident as another blow to an area already struggling with repeated assaults.
Gunmen Storm Village Under Cover of Darkness
Ishaya Dauda, national secretary of the Bundu Kahugu community, confirmed the attack on Tuesday. He said the assailants arrived under cover of darkness and began shooting indiscriminately.
According to Dauda, three residents died on the spot, while three others were taken away by the attackers. He added that the community suffered a similar attack less than two weeks earlier, during which four people were killed.
The repeated violence, he said, has heightened fear and frustration among residents.
Victims Identified by Community Leaders
Community officials identified those killed in the latest attack as Felix Augustine, Luka Yakubu and Ezra Namata.
Residents described the victims as well known members of the community whose deaths have deepened grief and anger in the area.
Following the attack, residents appealed to the Kaduna State Government and security agencies to deploy more troops to the area.
They also urged telecommunication companies to improve network coverage, saying poor signal often prevents residents from calling for help during attacks.
According to community leaders, attackers frequently take advantage of weak communication networks to escape without resistance.
Police Yet to Respond
As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had not responded to requests for comment.
Residents said the lack of immediate security response after attacks has worsened their sense of vulnerability and left communities to rely on self help during emergencies.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about rising banditry across parts of southern Kaduna, where communities continue to face deadly raids despite ongoing security operations.
Local leaders warned that without sustained security presence and improved communication infrastructure, more attacks could follow.
