An early-morning explosion rocked the Bayelsa State Secretariat complex in Yenagoa on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the area and prompting an immediate security response.
Authorities confirmed the explosion occurred at about 6 a.m. and was suspected to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED).
Despite the alarming incident, officials said there were no casualties or property damage, a development credited to the swift intervention of security operatives.
According to Musa Mohammed, spokesperson of the Bayelsa State Police Command, the Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Edebor, personally led a rapid-response operation to the scene.
The team included the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, a special drone squad, and other tactical operatives.
On arrival, the EOD unit secured the area, contained the situation, and conducted a detailed sweep. During the search, officers discovered an additional unexploded IED, which they safely neutralised to prevent further danger.
60-Year-Old Man Arrested at Explosion Scene
Police confirmed that a suspect, identified as 60-year-old Pentecost Elijah from Otuan community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was apprehended at the scene in connection with the incident.
He is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department. Authorities say he will be formally charged in court once investigations are completed.
The police reassured residents that the situation is under control and urged the public not to panic. Citizens were advised to continue their lawful activities while security agencies maintain vigilance and continue investigations into the incident.
