The African Democratic Congress and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have taken divergent positions on the 2027 general election timetable announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
INEC fixed February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, a date the ADC described as a constructive step that offers political actors clarity for preparation.
INEC 2027 election date sparks split
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party welcomed the decision, saying early notice allows stakeholders to plan effectively.“The African Democratic Congress notes the announcement by INEC fixing February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections,” the statement said, adding that the timetable provides “needed clarity for long-term planning and democratic preparation.”
Hours after the ADC endorsed the schedule, Atiku issued a separate statement urging INEC to shift the 2027 election date, arguing that the commission scheduled it during Ramadan, which will run from February 7 to March 8, 2027.
“That date falls squarely within the Ramadan period,” Atiku said, describing the holy month as a time of fasting and spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerian Muslims. He contended that holding elections during Ramadan could affect participation and raise questions about inclusivity in a religiously diverse country.
The election date faces criticism
Atiku said elections require “maximum participation, physical endurance and collective focus,” adding that fixing the poll during a major religious observance shows insufficient sensitivity.
“Inclusive planning is not optional; it is fundamental,” he also said, warning that missteps over timing could fuel doubts about INEC’s readiness to conduct credible polls.
In conclusion, the contrasting responses highlight internal differences within the ADC over the INEC 2027 election date, even as preparations for the next electoral cycle begin. INEC has not indicated whether it will review the timetable.
