At least 36 soldiers and Mobile Police officers have reportedly been killed after suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched coordinated attacks on two military formations in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, the hometown of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

The attacks reportedly occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Friday and targeted the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi and the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari.

According to security sources, the insurgents attacked both camps almost at the same time, triggering intense gun battles that lasted for several hours.

A soldier who survived the attack told SaharaReporters that troops at the 27 Task Force Brigade came under heavy assault while preparing to support personnel at the neighbouring Buniyadi camp.

Attacks Overwhelmed Most Parts of the Military

He explained that the attackers overwhelmed parts of the military formations during the midnight raid.

The soldier said three soldiers were killed at the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari, while the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi recorded a much higher number of casualties.

Another military source confirmed that the Buniyadi camp, which serves as a training centre for soldiers and Mobile Police officers deployed to the North-East, suffered severe losses during the attack.

According to information shared among security personnel, 33 people were reportedly killed at the training centre alone. The casualties included 17 Mobile Police officers undergoing training, 10 soldiers attached to the training programme, and six soldiers permanently deployed at the facility.

The source described the incident as one of the deadliest recent attacks in the area, adding that the security forces were unable to reinforce the Buniyadi camp because their own formation also came under attack.

The combined death toll from both attacks currently stands at 36, based on figures obtained from military sources.

Videos said to show the aftermath of the attacks and the killing of security personnel have also surfaced online.
