KEY POINTS

• The PDP and Allied Peoples’ Movement have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen opposition collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.

• The agreement was signed in Ibadan during a meeting of political leaders, stakeholders and supporters from both parties.

• The coalition is aimed at building a united front to challenge the ruling APC in the next general elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party (Peoples Democratic Party) and the Allied Peoples’ Movement (Allied Peoples Movement) have officially deepened their political collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The agreement was sealed in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, during a high-level gathering at the PDP South-West Secretariat, which brought together party leaders, political stakeholders, supporters, and aspirants from both sides.

The signing ceremony is part of ongoing efforts by opposition parties to consolidate strength and present a more unified front against the ruling All Progressives Congress in the next election cycle.

The event was described as a strategic step toward building political alignment that would enhance cooperation between both parties at all levels of governance.

As part of the agreement, representatives from both parties formally signed the MoU, with Seyi Bamidele signing on behalf of the PDP and Oladele Oyadeji representing the APM.

Governor Seyi Makinde and the National Chairman of the APM, Yusuf Dantalle, also appended their signatures to the agreement, signalling top-level commitment to the alliance.

Coalition Talks and Political Realignment

The development comes amid growing political realignments across Nigeria’s opposition landscape as parties explore possible coalitions ahead of 2027.

The PDP-APM alliance is expected to coordinate strategies for fielding candidates across different levels of elections, including state assemblies and the presidency.

Political observers say the move reflects increasing efforts by opposition groups to close ranks in order to improve their chances against the APC in what is expected to be a highly competitive election season.

The new partnership is also seen as part of broader negotiations aimed at resolving internal divisions within opposition parties and strengthening electoral competitiveness.

Analysts suggest that the alliance could influence future discussions around candidate selection, zoning arrangements, and coalition-building strategies as the 2027 elections approach.

However, questions remain about how the arrangement will affect internal dynamics within the PDP and whether it will lead to further political restructuring within Nigeria’s opposition space.
