President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on 50 Nigerians in recognition of their roles in the struggle for democracy and resistance against military rule.

The announcement was made during his Democracy Day address on Friday, where he paid tribute to journalists, civil rights activists, political leaders, and military officers who contributed to Nigeria’s return to democratic governance.

He said the honours reflect the sacrifices made by individuals who endured persecution, imprisonment, exile, and other hardships during military rule to ensure the survival of democracy in the country.

Tinubu described June 12, 1993, as a landmark in Nigeria’s democratic journey, stressing that it represents more than an election but a symbol of national unity and collective aspiration for freedom.

He said the heroes of June 12 achieved political freedom for the country, while the present generation must now focus on securing economic prosperity and strengthening democratic institutions.

According to him, democracy must translate into real-life improvements such as better opportunities for young people, thriving businesses, improved livelihoods for farmers, and dignity for workers.

Call to deepen democratic institutions and national development

The president urged Nigerians to strengthen and protect democratic institutions built on the sacrifices of pro-democracy advocates, noting that each generation has a responsibility to advance national progress.

He added that while the founding generation secured independence and the June 12 activists secured democracy, the current administration and citizens must work toward securing economic prosperity and accountability in governance.

Tinubu also noted that a full breakdown of the honours and categories of recipients would be released in the coming days.

The awardees include a wide range of individuals such as pro-democracy activists, journalists, civil society leaders, and military officers who supported democratic restoration efforts during military rule.

Notable names listed include journalists, rights advocates, and former military officers who played different roles in the struggle for democracy, including some who were honoured posthumously.
