  • Suspected bandits attacked Ungushi, Gwandi and Maikurfuna in Kebbe LGA, forcing women, children and elderly residents to flee.
  • More than 300 cattle and seven camels were reportedly rustled, while several men were allegedly killed.
  • Two injured victims are receiving treatment, as displaced residents continue arriving in Kebbe town for safety.

Suspected bandits have attacked several communities in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, forcing residents, including women, children and elderly people, to flee their homes.

The affected communities include Ungushi, Gwandi and Maikurfuna, where residents reportedly came under attack as armed men invaded the area.

Conflict reporter Bakatsine reported the development on Sunday, stating that displaced residents from Ungushi began arriving in Kebbe town from about 8pm on Saturday.

The attacks reportedly triggered a mass movement of residents seeking safety away from the affected communities.

Many of those who fled their homes were reportedly left without shelter after arriving in Kebbe.

According to the report, some of the displaced residents spent the night in the rain as they sought refuge following the attacks.

More residents were said to have continued arriving in Kebbe on Sunday morning, suggesting that the number of displaced persons could rise as more people escape from the affected communities.

The situation has reportedly placed additional pressure on residents and authorities in Kebbe town, as families forced to abandon their homes seek temporary shelter and safety.

Bandits reportedly rustle over 300 cattle, seven camels

Beyond the displacement of residents, the attackers reportedly made away with a large number of livestock.

Local sources cited in the report said the bandits rustled more than 300 cattle and seven camels from Ungushi and Gwandi during the attacks.

The livestock raids are expected to further worsen the economic difficulties faced by rural communities, many of whose livelihoods depend heavily on cattle rearing and other forms of agriculture.

Livestock rustling has remained a major concern in several parts of northern Nigeria, with armed groups often targeting rural settlements to seize animals and undermine the livelihoods of residents.

Several men were also reportedly killed during the attacks, although the exact number of casualties in Ungushi, Maikurfuna and Gwandi had not been established at the time of the report.

Two victims, identified as Usman Umar Margai and Sani Abdullahi Gwandi, were reportedly receiving treatment at the General Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds.

The reported injuries underscore the violence involved in the attacks, while the uncertainty surrounding the casualty figures means the full impact of the incident remains unclear.

The latest report came after an earlier alert issued on Saturday night, when Bakatsine reported that suspected bandits were already attacking Ungushi.

The conflict reporter had called for urgent security intervention, warning that the attackers were operating in the community and surrounding areas.

Despite the warning, residents were subsequently forced to flee their homes, with many seeking safety in Kebbe town.

The incident adds to the growing pattern of attacks, displacement, abductions and livestock rustling affecting rural communities across parts of northern Nigeria.

Communities in vulnerable areas continue to face security challenges as armed groups target settlements where residents often have limited access to immediate security protection.
